Monte-Carlo, années 1960, jour de grand prix. Embauché par une écurie anglaise de formule 1, le mécanicien Jack Preston saffaire, juste avant le départ, aux derniers réglages dun bolide. Quand sélance imprudemment aux abords du circuit une jeune star de cinéma au faîte de sa gloire, Jack relâche son attention, se retourne et ne voit quelle. Négligence ou fatalité, survient alors dans son dos une explosion : Jack se précipite vers la jeune femme et, de son corps, la protège. Grièvement brûlé, le mécanicien est évacué, transporté à lhôpital. Quelque temps plus tard il est rapatrié en Angleterre, dans son village où on le considère dorénavant comme un héros. Curieusement, et malgré une interview réalisée à lhôpital, les médias ne se font pas lécho de cet acte héroïque, pas plus que lactrice nadresse un signe de gratitude à son bienfaiteur. Ayant retrouvé son modeste quotidien, Jack achat peine à se reconstruire. Assurément, pense-t-il, la jeune femme va chercher à le retrouver... Virtuose du récit, Peter Terrin, dans une écriture sobre associée à un sens remarquable de limage et de la lumière, donne à cette tragique confrontation entre rêve et réalité une puissance dévocation magistrale.
